Partners Empowering Neighborhoods (PEN)

PBHA’s Partners Empowering Neighborhoods (PEN) works with adult immigrants across Boston to develop English language proficiency. The curriculum covers the fundamentals of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Through participation in PEN, students learn the skills they need to adjust to and succeed in their new environment in English.

Partners Empowering Neighborhoods holds English language classes for adult immigrants taught by college students through Zoom. We provide comprehensive teaching training to all new volunteers, and no prior teaching experience or language knowledge is needed. We run classes every day of the week in the evenings and on weekend mornings. Classes are 90 minutes long and co-taught by a team of 2 to 3 instructors. Usually one instructor on the team is a returning instructor who will help train new instructors.

Please reach out to pen@pbha.org with any questions!

  • Through our own registration form and the PBHA common app. We accept non-college volunteers.

  • Through our own registration form, though we are looking to move this to Salesforce /PBHA next year.
