Cambridge loves Moss Point
Thursday, February 9, 2006
The devastated Gulf Coast town of Moss Point, Miss., received some in-person TLC from Cantabrigians. Cambridge adopted Moss Point to help the town of 15,000 recover from Hurricane Katrina. The last week of January, 14 Harvard University students spent a week hanging drywall, replacing wiring and putting up insulation. The effort was coordinated through the Phillips Brooks House Association, a student-led nonprofit public service organization at Harvard. The Harvard COOP footed the bill for the trip. Cambridge's Mo Barbosa also made the trip. Student Miki Cohen said Moss Pointers need receptive ears as much as they need muscular arms. "It seemed that the residents of Moss Point feel that their loss has gone unnoticed through the media's focus on New Orleans," Cohen said. "So largely, these people need someone to listen to their stories." The same week the students were in Moss Point, Wendi Hooks, assistant to Moss Point Mayor Xavier Bishop, visited Cambridge. On Wednesday, Bishop is slated to be in Cambridge, where he'll meet with Mayor Ken Reeves and others involved in the sister city project.
